District using local TV channel to get parents tuned into education agenda

Athens cable subscribers are getting more than a scrolling list of announcements and board meeting reruns these days on the local-access cable channel dedicated to the Clarke County School District.

Staff in the school district's communications office spent the past year developing original programming to give viewers a window into the classroom on Channel 16, one of Charter Communication's Public Education and Government channels.

"Up until this year, we primarily used Channel 16 to inform the community about events and other announcements about the school district," said Anisa Sullivan Jimenez, communications director for the Clarke County School District. "This year, we've been able to take it to a different level with an emphasis on parenting and family-friendly programming."

One of Superintendent Philip Lanoue's goals this year was to increase family involvement and improve communication with families who might not be privy to some of the nuances of a public school system, Jimenez said.

Through a $7,800 contract with the University of Georgia Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, the school district hired Adam Avant, a doctoral student, to tape and edit videos that explain to parents how the state's curriculum is used in classrooms and how students can improve studying skills in reading, math and science.

The money to pay Avant comes from federal Title I funds that are given to schools specifically to help low-income students and to promote
